The 2012 United States House of Representatives elections in Idaho will be held on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 to elect the two U.S. Representatives from the state, one from each of the state's two congressional districts. The elections will coincide with the elections of other federal and state offices, including a quadrennial presidential election. Primary elections will be held on May 15, 2012.[1]
The 2010 United States Census found that the population of the 1st district, which comprises the west of the state and includes Canyon County and part of Ada County (including part of Boise), is 116,278 greater than that of the 2nd district, which includes the east of the state and the majority of Boise. This shift in population may mean the 2nd district, currently represented by Republican Mike Simpson, may include more of Ada County in the 113th Congress.[2]
Raúl Labrador, a Republican, was first elected to represent the 1st district in 2010. Jimmy Farris, a former NFL player and Lewiston native, will seek the Democratic nomination to challenge Labrador.[3] Walt Minnick, a Democrat who represented the 1st district from 2009 until 2011, said in December 2010 "I think I'm done with elective politics. I'm not sure what I'm going to do, but I think it's time for somebody else."[4]
